Range..

So, in Europe the power of a radio transmitter used in drones is limited to 18dbm, well below the ability of the controller’s 25dbm.

This equates to a massive cut in the range of the spark, about 500 meters is the limit before the video signal gives up and the drone returns. But fear not, there is something you can do to get the full range.

It basically involves fooling the DJI Go app to think your in a country that uses the FCC rules instead of the CE rules. To do it, follow these steps.

  • Ensure the drone and RC are both off
  • Turn aeroplane mode on your phone or tablet to On, and make sure to fully quit the DJI Go app
  • Install a fake GPS app and enable it.
  • Set your location somewhere in America or Canada.
  • Turn on the RC and drone and allow them to.connect.
  • Connect to the aircraft’s WiFi signal
  • Once the app starts up, it’ll ask you if you want to change the WiFi settings. Select ok.
  • Wait for the drones/RC’s network to come back online, and power everything off
  • Quit the app and the fake GPS provider, restart the drone/RC and app
  • When asked again to alter the WiFi settings, hit cancel

And that’s it. Each time you launch the app.from here, it’ll ask you to change the settings, always cancel the dialog.

To confirm your in FCC mode, goto the wireless page in the app, and look if there is a channel 12/13, if not your in FCC mode. Range in this mode will get you in excess of 1000 meters, as opposed to the 500 in the CE mode.

New Camera

So I recently got a VIRB camera. I had wanted for a helmet camera, but there are a few things up with that. One, is that this is a very heavy camera, and quite large. Mounting it to the side of the helmet makes it very noticeable in the lean due to the weight, I tried mounting it on top of the helmet, but finding an area on the helmet that stops the shake is hard. I have a Kask Mojito helmet, which has no flat areas at all. It does work, it is just quite wobbly.

The other issue I have, is that the camera over exposes quite a lot. When compared to the GoPro Hero I have mounted to the handlebars, its very noticable. I can live with that, just about. A Lot of it could be dealt with in Post Process, but there is not really a massive need. I only plan to use helmet cam when something happens, it will pretty much be throw away footage. It seems to be mostly when leaving shaded areas, and the GoPro can have issues with this too, it just seems to deal with it quicker. VIRB does overexpose consistently through the frame however.

In other ways, this is a good camera. I think I’ll be keeping it around, and find away to helmet mount it at some point.

I also got hold of a repair stand. This is a massive help when working on the bike, as having it elevated, and off the ground saves my back and makes drive chain adjustments so easy. No more tipping the bike over and working on it upside down. Probably one of the better purchases I’ve made recently..

Despite what Simon at VeloHeads says (I have no reason to doubt him, and he has been repairing bikes for god knows how long, as he likes to point out) however, I don’t like clamping the carbon seatpost, so I have to swap it out for an old aluminium one when I have it in the stand.

Statistics. Damn Statistics

I love pouring over data. I collect it how I can, when I can and as often as I can.

One of the tools I use to generate some stats when I’m cycling is my Garmin 510. I thought I’d just take the time to show how I have mine setup, as there are plenty of reviews on the unit already.

So, there are a few activity profiles you can choose from. The way I have mine setup is with three profiles, Train, Commute and Race. I use Train the most, followed by commute. Train is setup to show the most information on each of the available five screens.

The first screen I have as this. Showing:108

  1. Time Moving
  2. Current Speed
  3. Distance Covered
  4. Current Cadence
  5. Heart Rate
  6. Elevation
  7. Temperature

The last two on this, elevation and temperature are not important metrics, and can be removed. But everything else, is what I’d call an “At a glance Metric”, ie, something you want to see when you glance down. This is where I have the unit display data when I ride normally, as it is the most important set of metrics.

The second screen

  1. 40Elapsed time – The total time the unit has been recording, including auto-paused time.
  2. Average Speed
  3. Average Heart Rate
  4. Average Cadence
  5. Total Ascent
  6. Total Descent

This is the screen I take in when I stop, as it shows the information as a set of averages.

  2. Sunset. Handy so you know when the light will start to fail

  5. Battery level
  6. GPS Accuracy

The Fourth Screen

  4. % of max heart rate

This is probably the second most active screen I use, especially when I’m pushing. I can keep myself in a HR zone, and closely monitor when I need to push, or calm down. I find the heart rate graph to be incredibly useful to see the pattern over time.

The Fifth Screen

154I show laps on the final screen, not really something I use a lot of, but its good to have it here.

  1. Number of laps currently recorded
  2. Speed of the last lap
  3. Heart Rate on the last Lap
  4. Last Lap Time
  5. Current Lap Time

I have the profile set to Auto-Lap at 2 miles. I dont often take much notice of laps when I’m riding, but it comes in handy on RideWithGPS when I review.

When I’m done with the ride, I’ll head on over to RideWithGPS.com and look there. By far RideWithGPS has the best data handling of the main cycling sites I use. (Strava, Endomondo, Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS).
